Examination Hall Rules

The championship exam is sat online, at home, under a recording the family makes itself. These rules keep every result fair and verifiable. Please read them with your child before exam day. By starting the exam, the parent or guardian agrees to them.

1. At a glance

WhereOnline, from home. Sign in, open My Account → World Championship Access, and press Enter the examination hall. The button appears once your entry fee has been received, and opens only while the window is open. The exact times and a countdown are shown there.
When16–17 January 2027, in your own time zone. The window opens at midnight on 16 January on the first clocks in the world to reach it and closes at midnight after 17 January on the last, so every family has both full days wherever they live. Your account page shows the exact opening and closing times in your local time. Start at any time while the window is open.
AttemptsOne. Once the exam starts, it cannot be restarted.
Who can sit itRegistered competitors whose entry fee has been received, at their assigned level. Levels follow the child's age on 31 December 2026.
EquipmentA laptop, desktop, tablet or phone with a working camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Computers record the screen; phones and tablets record with the front camera.
SupervisionSelf-recorded: the whole screen, the camera and the microphone are recorded on your own computer.

2. The exam at each level

3. What you need

  • A laptop or desktop computer, or a tablet or phone, plugged in to charge. On a phone or tablet the front camera records the exam, so stand the device up with the child’s face and hands in view.
  • The latest version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer; Chrome on Android; Safari on iPhone and iPad.
  • A working camera and microphone, built in or plugged in.
  • A steady internet connection.
  • About 1 GB of free space on the computer for the recording.
  • For rounds where it is allowed (see section 2): one standard physical abacus.

4. Setting up the room

  • A quiet, well-lit room, with the child at a clear table.
  • Place the camera so the child's face and hands, and the abacus if used, can be seen.
  • Nothing else on the table: no paper, pens, books, calculators, phones, smart watches or earphones.
  • Close all other apps and browser tabs, and turn off notifications.
  • A parent or guardian should be nearby throughout. At Sprinter, Ace and Grandmaster they must not help in any way.
  • Sprout and Riser: a parent may sit beside the child to help with the computer only (see section 6).

5. Before the exam starts

The examination hall page walks you through three checks and a declaration. The exam cannot start until all of them are complete.

  1. Device check. The page confirms the browser can record.
  2. Camera and microphone. Allow them when the browser asks. The camera picture stays on screen for the whole exam.
  3. Share entire screen (computers only). Choose "Entire screen", not a window or a tab. Phones and tablets skip this step; the front camera records instead.
  4. Declaration. The parent or guardian ticks each statement in section 11 and types their full name.

Pressing Start the exam uses the one attempt. Full screen turns on and recording begins.

6. During the exam

  • Rounds are taken in order. Before each round, a screen shows its name, number of questions and time. The clock starts when the first question appears.
  • The clock cannot be paused. When it reaches zero, the round closes and any unanswered questions score zero.
  • Questions appear one at a time. Type the answer and press Enter. There is no going back to an earlier question.
  • Leaving a question blank is allowed. It scores zero and moves you on.
  • Between rounds there is a break of up to 1 minute, with a countdown on screen. Press Begin when ready; if the break runs out, the next round starts by itself. Before round 1 you have up to 5 minutes after pressing Start, also with a countdown. The whole exam is sat in one sitting.
  • Stay on the exam page in full screen. If you switch to another tab or app, the question is hidden until you return, and a warning is counted and shown on screen. Leaving full screen or stopping the screen share or camera also counts. The exam carries on, and every warning is reported to the organisers.
  • The child must work out every answer alone. No one may speak to, signal to or help the child with a question during a round.
  • Computer help at Sprout and Riser: a parent may type the answer the child says aloud, press Enter, and press Begin between rounds. The parent must not suggest, correct, hesitate over or react to any answer. The child's voice must be clear on the recording.

7. The abacus and other aids

  • Sprout: a physical abacus is allowed in every round.
  • Riser and Sprinter: allowed in the Core Calculation and Speed Sums rounds. The Flash round is mental-only: put the abacus out of reach before it begins.
  • Ace and Grandmaster: every round is mental-only. No abacus.
  • No calculators, phones, apps, online abacus tools, written working or notes, at any level.
  • Where the abacus is allowed, it must stay in view of the camera.

8. The recording

  • The recording captures the whole screen, including the camera picture, and the microphone.
  • It is saved only on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded to us during the exam.
  • At the end, download the file and keep it safe until results are announced.
  • We may ask you to send the recording to check a result. An exam whose recording cannot be provided when requested may be disqualified.
  • Once results are announced, you may delete the file.

9. If something goes wrong

  • Every answer is saved the moment it is entered.
  • Internet or power drops: reopen the page and sign in again as quickly as you can. The exam continues from the next question. The round clock and the break countdown keep running while you are away, and later rounds start by themselves.
  • Screen share or camera stops (on a phone or tablet, the camera is the recording): a banner appears. Press the button to turn it back on and carry on.
  • You cannot continue: email hello@globalgeniusleague.com within 24 hours with the competitor's name and level, and what happened. The organisers review each case and may offer a fresh attempt. This is at their discretion.

10. Scoring, results and fair play

  • One point for each correct answer. No marks are taken off for wrong or blank answers.
  • Exams are marked automatically on our server. Scores are not shown at the end of the exam.
  • Sprout is ranked by points alone. Every other level is ranked by points, with ties broken by less time used. Competitors who are still equal share the place.
  • Every competitor who finishes receives an award: Gold (85% or more), Silver (75% or more), Bronze (65% or more) or Merit.
  • Results are checked by the organisers before they are announced, and every competitor receives a certificate.
  • Any breach of these rules, including help from another person, use of an aid that is not allowed, or a missing or altered recording, may lead to a result being withheld or disqualified.
  • The organisers' decision on results is final.

11. Declaration by the parent or guardian

These are the statements confirmed on screen before the exam starts.

  1. I am the parent or guardian of the competitor. I have read these rules with them, and I will stay nearby for the whole exam.
  2. My child will solve every question alone, with no calculator, phone, written notes or help from anyone, including me, and will use an abacus only in rounds where it is allowed. (Sprout and Riser: I may help only with the computer, typing the answer my child gives and pressing Enter or Begin, and never with the sums.)
  3. The camera and screen recording will stay on throughout. I will download the recording, keep it until results are announced, and send it if the organisers ask. An exam whose recording cannot be provided when requested may be disqualified.
  4. I understand there is one attempt, and that the organisers' decision on results is final.
